Glaðheimar CAMPGROUND, COTTAGES €

( 820 1300; www.gladheimar.is; tent site per person Ikr900, campervan site Ikr2200, cottages Ikr13,000-21,000) In a lovely setting near the river (off the Ring Road), Glaðheimar has camping and an assortment of self- contained cottages sleeping up to six people (larger cottages have the bonus of a hot tub, a few also have sauna). Linen costs Ikr1800 per person. There are also sleeping-bag beds available (Ikr5000). The reception building doubles as the town’s tourist info centre.

Hótel Blönduós HOTEL €€

( 452 4205; www.hotelblonduos.is; Aðalgata 6; s/d incl breakfast Ikr18,700/22,400; ) The town’s only hotel has dated decor and a slightly neglected air, but will do in a pinch. It’s popular with visiting anglers. Nearby is the hotel’s cheaper annexe, the Old Post House (s/d Ikr12,500/15,500) , with shared facilities.

Potturinn INTERNATIONAL €€

(Nordurlandsvegur 4; mains Ikr1690-6000; 11am-10pm) A surprisingly international menu greets diners at this modern restaurant neighbouring the N1. There’s soup and salad all day, fantastic burgers, and oddities like grilled seal steak and tandoori-spiced lamb.

Við Árbakkann CAFE €

(Húnabraut 2; mains Ikr550-1890; 11am-8pm Jun-Aug) In a big blue house by the swimming pool and supermarket, this country cafe serves up soups, salads and grilled bagels and paninis.

Samkaup-Úrval SUPERMARKET €

(Húnabraut 4; 9am-7pm Mon-Fri, 10am-6pm Sat, 1-5pm Sun) Fulfils self-catering needs. There’s an early-opening bakery-cafe next door.
